Michael Hanagan
Adjunct Associate Professor of History
Michael Hanagan received his B.A. at the University of Illinois in 1969 and his Ph.D. in History at the University of Michigan in 1976. His specialties include European labor history, French social history, and world history. He is the author of The Logic of Solidarity: Artisans and Industrial Workers in Three French Towns (University of Illinois, 1979) and Nascent Proletarians: Class Formation in Post-Revolutionary France (Blackwell, 1989). He has edited a number of collections, most recently (with Charles Tilly) Expanding Rights: Reconfiguring StatesChallenging Authority: The Historical Study of Contentious Politics (U of Minnesota, 1998). He is also finishing a manuscript with Miriam Cohen on the comparative history of the welfare state in England, France and the United States, 1870-1950. Together with John Coatsworth, Juan Cole, Peter Perdue, Charles Tilly and Louise Tilly, he is in the final stages of completing a world history textbook, "Global Connections: Politics, Exchange, and Social Life in World History." He served as senior editor for International Labor and Working-Class History for the last four years and has been on the Consulting Board of Theory and Society for the last six.
