In addition to teaching in the department of geology and geography, she is a founding member of the environmental studies steering committee and the women's studies steering committee at Vassar and teaching courses regularly for both multidisciplinary programs. Among those courses is Earth System Science and Environmental Justice in which students learn basic elements of geology that related to issues of environmental justice.

She is also the editor and a contributor to The Earth Around Us: Maintaining a Livable Planet (WH Freeman, 2000), a book of essays (including contributions by John McPhee and Stephen Jay Gould) for the general public, concerning the importance of earth science to environmental issues. The Earth Around Us was named one of the top ten books of the year by Discover magazine.
